By the time registration closed at the start of day 2 of the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $ 25,000 no-limit hold’em high roller there had been 247 entries made, blowing away last year’s record turnout of 204 entrants to establish a new high-water mark for this event. The event feature 198 unique entrants and 49 re-entries. As a result of this 21 percent increase in number of entries year-over-year the event built a gigantic $ 6,051,500 prize pool, with nearly $ 1.3 million going to the eventual champion.
At the end of day 2 only 14 players remained, with defending champion of this event Vanessa Selbst in the chip lead with 1,633,000. Last year Selbst topped a 204-player field to earn the title and the first-place prize of $ 1,424,420. That win is also notable because it was the score that propelled her into the lead on the female all-time tournament earnings list.
Selbst has had an impressive run so far at the 2014 PCA, finishing third in the $ 100,000 super high roller for $ 760,640 and then making a deep run in the $ 10,300 main event, ultimately busting in 42nd place. Now she is in a strong position to make a run at defending her title from last year.
Attempting to stand in her way are plenty of top poker professionals, including 2012 WSOP main event champion Greg Merson (1,112,000), Marvin Rettenmaier (1,014,000), Robert Mizrachi (856,000), Dani Stern (837,000) and 2013 Card Player Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu (723,000).
Only the top 31 finishers made the money in this event, with the money bubble bursting late on day two. Kyle Julius was the last player eliminated outside of the money, calling an all-in shove from the button by Vanessa Selbst with the AK
