Phil Ivey has added another incredible achievement to his unrivaled poker resume, topping an elite field of 46 entries in the 2014 LK Boutique $ 250,000 Aussie Millions Challenge to win $ 4 million AUD ($ 3,573,600 USD). Ivey won this very event in 2012 and now holds the honor of being the first two-time champion. As a result of this gigantic score Ivey has now crossed the $ 20 million mark in career live tournament earnings, putting him in third place on the all-time money earners list.
This event saw a dramatic increase in turnout for it’s fourth running. When this event first took place in 2011 it drew 20 total entries, and the two subsequent years it mustered less than that. This year’s 46 total entries built a record prize pool of $ 11,720,000 AUD.
Only six players made the money, with a min-cash being worth $ 500,000 AUD. 2011 champion of this event Erik Seidel was eliminated on that gigantic money bubble, falling just short of making back-to-back final tables after finishing third in the $ 100,000 AUD high roller just days earlier. The first player eliminated in the money was Tom “Durrrr” Dwan (6th – $ 500,000 AUD). 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $ 100,000 super high roller champion Fabian Quoss (5th – $ 800,000 AUD) was next to exit, bringing his year-to-date earnings to more than $ 2.3 million USD less than a month a half into the new year.
Daniel Negreanu hit the rail in fourth place, earning $ 1,250,000 AUD. Negreanu was in for three buy-ins in this quarter-million event, meaning that he was able to profit $ 500,000 AUD after investing $ 750,000 AUD.
Mike “Timex” McDonald was also in for three buy-ins, and also ended up profiting after he finished third for $ 1.9 million AUD ($ 1,697,460 USD) just days after finishing runner-up in the $ 100,000 AUD high roller for $ 1,500,000 AUD ($ 1,343,250 USD). McDonald had also made two final tables just weeks earlier at the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, finishing eighth in the $ 100,000 super high roller there and then following that up with a runner-up finish in the PCA main event for $ 1,064,865 USD, which means that McDonald has tallied three seven-figure scores already in 2014, with this most recent earning him another 400 Card Player Player of the Year points. As a result he has overtaken the lead in the POY race with 3,200 points and year-to-date earnings of $ 4,322,895.
Heads-up play began with Isaac Haxton holding a slight lead, which he quickly extended. At his low point Ivey held only 2 million chips, less than 20 big-blinds. He was able to mount a comeback, however, and by the time the final hand arose he held a more than 4-to-1 lead. On the last hand Ivey limped from the button and Haxton moved all-in for just over 2 million in chips. Ivey called with the A

. The board ran out AK973 and Ivey’s pair of aces was enough to secure him the pot and the title for a second time. Haxton earned $ 2,820,000 AUD ($ 2,519,388 USD) for his runner-up finish, the largest score of his career.
